Was this a Bad Idea? Workshop air system .. Upgrade?
This week we work on the shop air system by adding a extra hose reel outside the shop to make things nicer when the weather isn't that great or I'm not around to open the doors for those folks that need air.

It's running good. I've had one O2 sensor fail and that's it. Knowing everything I know now, I'd have just put a LS in it and saved money over building a 383 sbc.

Thomson shafting is material for linear guides / linear bearings. If you have the material you should already know this. It's probably R c 60 or so. Trying to cut it in a band saw or checking the surface with a file will likely ruin the shaft for use as a linear guide. Next time, pay attention to the material you select. Know what it is and what it's for.

I've been missing you these days without our regular Saturday visits my friend so I just meander around these older posts that are always a bunch of fun. Thanks again and I hope things slow down enough to see you on Saturday mornings Steve and coffee time. When Plasma torches came to be I wonder how much the accetylene manufactoys hurt from their sales going down, down, down. I just use it with my rosebud now. I have a new us postal story for you. I pour pure silver in my little forge where I use shot/grain for my casting materials. It (50) ounces left Montana and promptly dissapeared. After a long hunt and track they found it in Oslo- Norway. At least it is still in system but Vanderhoof BC Canada is a little bit different than Oslo. It is the first time I have had any troubles from your Postal Service.

You can fix oil burners with a garden hose with a sprayer on mist. Get the engine up to operating temp and rev the engine up. Now slowly start spraying water do this for about 10 minutes. This cleans the carbon out of the ring lands and allows the oil control rings to work again.

Just caught up with this series and I'm mighty impressed. I had a remodeling business for 20 years before retirement and put on 2 or 3 composite roofs, usually heavier architectural style. That was enough to convince me that hiring roofers made more sense and was usually less expensive for my customers. Even on my own house I just couldn't afford the time for DIY roofing. And, yes, I can attest to the inevitable rain anytime you cut a hole in a roof!!!!!

So, just discovered your channel yesterday & have been up all night watching the square body vids for tips (off duty, but i work overnights, so… 🤣)… Just recently picked up an ‘87 recently. Actually have an appointment at 8am this morning to replace the windshield & seal (wish i’d watched THAT vid last week… i’m sure there will be rust, but this place doesn’t do that kind of work)… anyway, I like the look of those headlights. What are they, how do you like them, and where can i find them?

Well, it’s not a great idea but it’s not a really bad idea. When the hose won’t retract in the cold, you’ll just have to lay it on the ground in front of the door until you feel like getting out the ladder to go up there and deal with it.

Thanks for making the video.... 1) Make sure your dog is out of the way - they have no eye protection..... 2) I make mine and turned the C channel facing outside. That gave me square sides on the inside and channel on the outside for the wiring - so if and when my wiring goes bad I can access it easy. 3) There are plans on the internet for 3500 5x10 utilitrailer. I use C-channel, bought a bigger axel etc. and used pressure treated 2x8 on the floor. End result is a beast that probably weighs close to 800lbs. - but I have hauled some pretty heavy stuff (probably a hair overweight considering I have no brakes on the axle - but I pull with a 1ton pickup) 4) I went with torsion axle. Note, to make the mounting brakets on the inside, you have to order them that way..... I made the mistake of assuming C-channels were 2" wide. Not sure why I did that. I had to adjust with custom mouting plate. That plate/mount is stupid heavy duty.

A technique I came across recently that I thought I'd share, really blew my mind, and the few pro machinists listening as well. If you're surface grinding a part and, for whatever reason, none of the surfaces are close enough to "flat" for your liking, or you've flipped it over a few times and seem to be chasing a high or low you can't pin down, try this. Take one (or 2 stacked sheets, depending) of paper towel or shop towel, and soak in water. Lay them between the part and mag chuck and magnetize. Depending how janky the part is, you might want to take a light pass, flip, light pass, flip, etc. just until there aren't really deep lows or highs. The science behind this being, the saturated towel will help even out the highs and lows by allowing highs to sink further into the towel. Also, from what I've seen of this trick, for whatever reason the finish will be so much better than normal! 🤔

Steve, guess there must be a reason why you didn't run the airline down the outside corner of the shop wall, clear of the sliding door and mount the reel at chest height on the side wall? Would be more convenient access, (no ladders involved) if you have to work on the reel, just thinking out loud. Good to see you back in the saddle. Cheers from OZ 🍻👍
